The family of Chadwick Boseman, the Black Panther actor who was widely expected to win a posthumous Oscar for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, has defended the man who won the award.

Derrick Boseman said his brother would have been the first to congratulate Hopkins on his victory on Sunday night. According to Boseman, the late actor would have viewed winning an Oscar as an accomplishment rather than a “obsession,” adding that he believed all of the shortlisted actors were deserving of the award.

The actor’s brother, who died of cancer last August at the age of 43, says the family had no ill will toward Anthony Hopkins.

The late actor’s brother congratulates the 83-year-old, as the Academy is chastised for not allowing Hopkins to deliver his acceptance speech via Zoom.

Hopkins, who had posted a video from his late father’s grave earlier on Sunday, thanked the Academy in a video posted Monday morning, saying he did not expect to win and was “very grateful to the Academy.”

“I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us far too soon,” he added.
