Award-winning Nigerian Novelist, Chimamanda Adichie, said she was “heartbroken” as she was writing about her late father, Prof. James Nwoye Adichie, in the past tense. Prof. James Adichie died on June 10 in Anambra after a brief illness.

Adichie took to her Instagram page @chimamanda_adichie to share a piece she published about her grief.
“I am writing about my father in the past tense, and I can’t believe I’m writing about my father in the past tense. “My heart is broken,” she said.
In a two page write-up she shared along with a video on her Instagram page, Adichie expressed her love for her father and how she communicated with him days before his demise. Prof. Adichie was Nigeria’s first professor of statistics. He studied mathematics at Ibadan and got his PhD in statistics from Berkeley and returned to Nigeria shortly before the Biafran war.
The Adichie family had released a statement signed by Chuks Adichie, for the family, that the Professor died on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, at 88 years.
His dedicated life’s work was at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he was named Professor Emeritus in 2016. Upon his retirement, he lived in his hometown, Abba, Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State. He is survived by his wife Mrs Grace Ifeoma Adichie; their six children: Ijeoma, Uchenna, Chuks, Okechukwu, Chimamanda and Kenechukwu, as well as nine grandchildren, in-laws and many relatives. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course, the statement said.
